Meeting a Queen

I met Queen Noor a few years ago at an event in NYC. She loved the concept for Beauty and the East TV, an online blog and video series I created and produced as a way to unite cultures through entertainment. She’s so elegant and classy!

Style Files: 2006-10

When I was in high school, I kept a style journal. It was a “filofax” type of planner, and I would jot down each outfit I wore every day so that I wouldn’t repeat it for the entire year!  No, my parents weren’t rich nor did I have an extravagant budget for spending. I just knew how to mix and match pieces to make an entirely new looking outfit each day.  This was my hobby.

My style is my own.  I like to mix classic pieces with unique and quirky designs that I find in vintage boutiques and consignment shops.  Unique stitching details, pleats, buttons, seams, embroideries, patterns, prints, cuts & fabrics are what I look for.  It doesn’t have to be a well known designer as long as it speaks to me when I’m shopping, nor do I care if I wear something that is from another season. If I love it, I’ll wear it. The fact is, I don’t dress to impress others.  If an outfit makes me happy, I’m content. Fashion for me has always been a way of expressing myself since I was a child.

Here’s a trip down memory lane. My style files from the years 2006-11. It’s interesting to go back and see some of the outfits I picked. Many I would still wear, but some I’m happy I have given away!

The Nooristan Foundation

We have so much in America that we take for granted. That’s why I believe in giving to charity. One of the causes I hold near and dear to me is The Nooristan Foundation, a non-profit founded in 1999 that supports health care, vocational training programs and education for women and children in Afghanistan.

Here are some pictures from the Foundation’s annual galas over the past few years wearing some traditional Afghan clothes:

Our Babymoon

I did not enjoy being pregnant. Feeling sick, tired, heavy was not fun. The only joy was knowing my little one was going to join us in the world soon.  I didn’t get out much the last trimester because it was December – February in NYC. It was cold, dreary and suffocating. Thankfully, before I entered my last trimester, we went on a babymoon cruise to the Bahamas in November 2010 for some fun and R&R. I’m not sure I would fly again that late in a pregnancy again. On the flight to Miami, I felt Braxton Hick contractions and wanted nothing more than to lie in bed with my legs wrapped around my pregnancy pillow. When we got on the boat, there were waves in the ocean that caused the boat to rock back and forth the first night for hours. You can say that Kaiser and I were not feeling good.  Thankfully, the rest of the cruise was calm, and we enjoyed the beauty of the Bahamas.

Funny how I felt SO big on that trip but looking at the pictures my belly wasn’t as big as I thought.

Pregnancy Photo Shoot – NYC

Here’s a trip down memory lane being pregnant with Rumi. This was taken January 2010. I remember that evening. We drove from Manhattan to Queens to my sister’s friend’s apartment studio. I was feeling big, tight in my belly and super tired. I thought the photo shoot would never end. Now that I look back at the pictures, I think it’s great that we have captured a moment in time that Rumi can hold on to when she’s older.
